Shawn Hansen

May 4, 1978 — December 14, 2017

Surrounded by his family, Shawn Neil Hansen, 39, passed away at his home on December 14, 2017, after a valiant five-month battle with Neuro-Endocrine Tumors. He was born May 4, 1978, in Burley, Idaho, to Phyllis Ann Peterson and D. Neil Hansen. On his seventh birthday, the family moved to Driggs. He attended schools in Teton Valley, graduating in 1997.

Shawn was the oldest of four children. He loved growing up in Teton Valley where he had a passion for anything with a motor. He loved hunting and fishing and camping and being with his father. He was an avid scouter and achieved his Eagle Scout Rank when he was 13. He had a special love for snowmobiles and went snowmobiling every chance he got, sometimes even skipping school to do so.

Growing up, he always wanted to be with his dad. During the summers of his junior and senior years of high school, he logged with his father in Vernal, Utah.

He served a mission for the LDS church to the New Jersey Cherry Hill Mission. After he returned home from his mission, he attended Idaho State University in the Machinist program. He came back to Driggs during the summer break and met Bethany Jo Kohler who was working as a wrangler for Grand Targhee. That fall he made the best decision of his life when he proposed to her. They were married in the Idaho Falls Temple on November 16, 2001. Porter Neil was born in 2004 and Tanner Grant was born in 2007. The boys were the light of his life.

As he got older and he and his siblings had children, camping with the entire family was always a special time.

He owned his own excavation and trucking businesses. At the time of his death, he was the shop manager for Knight Transportation in Reno, Nevada. He was passionate about his work.

Shawn is survived by his wife Bethany and sons Porter, 13, and Tanner, 10, of Sparks, Nevada; his parents: Neil and Phyllis of Driggs, sister Felicity (Matt) Hansen of Idaho Falls; brothers: Aaron (Shelly) of Driggs and Evan (Kerri) of Grant; his in-laws: Jay and Dalene Kohler of Idaho Falls; Melanie (Fred) Bunce of Shelley; Christine (Travis) Boyle, Tom (Angela) and Ben (Andelyn) all of Idaho Falls, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He wanted to be an organ donor but because of the cancer they couldn’t use his organs. However, parts of his body were donated for further research to hopefully help someone else who gets this horrible disease.

The family wishes to express appreciation to Knight Transportation for their generous support and concern for Shawn and his family during his illness.

There will be a viewing from 6:00–8:00 p.m., Friday, Dec. 22, 2017, at Coltrin Mortuary, 2100 1st Street, and one hour prior to services on Saturday.
