Helen Schiers

June 4, 1938 — June 10, 2019

Helen Louise Schiers graduated from the school of mortality on June 10, 2019.  She was born June 4, 1938 To William S. and Alice J. Ellis on a small farm in Clarke, Idaho.  She was third in line with one Brother (Leon) and four sisters ( Dorothy, Maureen, Carolyn, Enid ) affectionately known as the Aunt Pile.  Her family eventually settled in Driggs, Idaho. She graduated from Teton High School. She had many friends and stayed in touch for all these years.   She married Charles U. Schiers Jr. September 21, 1956. They lived in Jackson, Idaho Falls and West Yellowstone for brief periods and then settled in Driggs in 1958.  They had 3 sons, Bill, David and John. She worked many years for VanGas Propane and also kept the books for Charlie’s Auto Repair which her husband Charlie owned and operated.  In 1979 Charlie had a debilitating accident. A spinal injury in his neck left him paralyzed and in a wheelchair. At the time doctors didn’t give Charlie long to survive. Helen disagreed and kept him active and healthy for the next 26 years with the help of many earthbound angels.  While taking care of Charlie she also worked for the briefly for the Kwik Way Convenience store and retired from Key Bank. She loved her grandchildren most of all. She would give them anything but most importantly her time. They have many fond memories of sleepovers and wienie roasts.  She always said that laundry would wait. Just prior to Charlie’s passing Helen began her own ordeal when she was diagnosed with leukemia. She endured two rounds of difficult chemotherapy which put the disease into remission, but then lived with some life altering consequences brought on by the side effects of that treatment.  In the fall of 2018 her doctor shared the bad news that the disease was no longer in remission. Helen missed her husband, she missed her independence and chose not to pursue another round of treatment. She faced it with courage. She never quit smiling.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Charlie, her brother Leon, and a grandson Gabriel.

She leaves behind her sisters, 3 sons, 15 grandchildren and 13 greatgrandchildren. We will all truly miss her.

The family would like to thank the Staff and Hospice care at Homestead Senior Living who took such wonderful care of mom.  She loved her friends there. There is also a deep sense of gratitude for all of the people who did so much for mom and dad over the years.  We feel a debt that cannot be repaid.
