Clarice Coburn

September 29, 1927 — December 3, 2017

Clarice Mae Coburn, age 90, passed away Sunday, December 3, 2017. She was surrounded by family who held her hands as she slipped from this earth. She was born September 29, 1927 to Parley and Rachel (Nyman) Carlson in the family home at Wapello Idaho. Siblings were Jessie, Naomi, E.J. and Editha.

She grew up a farm girl who loved to climb cottonwoods, run through the water when her Daddy would irrigate the lawn, and send cucumber boats down the ditches. She was raised and nourished by a strong and loving family. In time she learned to drive the team of horses used to stack hay with a derrick and pull a harrow; necessary tasks since her brother was serving in WW2.

Clarice attended Idaho State University where she met and soon fell in love with Donald Fred Coburn; a handsome young man from the hills of Southern Idaho. Her plans to be a school teacher and finish college were very short lived. Don proposed to her at a football game. They were married June 5 th , 1946. They became the parents of four children, Kelley (Sally) Coburn, Jeanne (Steven) Larsen, Richard (Carla) Coburn, and Steven (Kristen) Coburn. They were blessed with 25 grandchildren and 61 great grandchildren.

Don’s work as a pharmacist took them to several cities. When an opportunity to buy a store in Driggs, Idaho arose Don jumped at the chance to return to his birthplace. So Teton Valley it was. After a brief period of reluctance, Clarice gave her heart to the wildly beautiful valley where they raised their family. In time, the good folks of Teton Valley came to knew her simply as “Granny.”

Clarice was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. She enjoyed the time spent working with others in numerous positions. A mission to England, where Clarice and Don served in the London Temple together, was the source of many fond memories. Clarice will be remembered by those who knew her as a perfect example of kindness, caring, and selfless service. She was a devoted follower of the teachings of Christ. She understood deep and unconditional love. She loved her home and her family was her life’s work.

Funeral Services will be Friday December 8th at 11 AM at the Driggs LDS Stake Center. Visitations will be from 6:30 to 8:30 PM Thursday and from 9:30 to 10:30 AM Prior to the funeral, both at the church. Burial will be in the Driggs Cemetery under the direction of Valley Mortuary in Driggs.
